Today I received what is possibly the most exciting email I have seen in a very long time. I’ll let you read the opening sentence yourself…
How great is that?! Not to get too excited of course but, wow, it’s a beginning! And the best thing? The government is wanting to hear from those who live with chronic pain! Yes, you read that correctly. Queensland Health actually wants to hear from patients (or their carers) about their experience living with chronic pain and access to health care.
As I’m sure anyone living with chronic pain can attest, one thing you very quickly become used to is the fact that medical professionals turn off their ears. They might look straight at you, they might even nod their heads as you talk but they don’t actually hear what you have to say. GP’s have 10-15 minutes to diagnose and send you on your way. Specialists have 10-15 minutes to work out you aren’t their problem and send you on your way. I don’t dare count up the number of times a long awaited specialist appointment has ended with the specialist of the moment mumbling “I don’t know” while they finish up their clinical notes, the universal sign that it is time for you to slink out of their office.
But now it is our turn. It is our turn to tell the government what is needed to improve the lives of those living with chronic pain. So, do just that. Click here to make sure your voice is heard.
